About these tools

These tools move photos between HEIC and the formats the rest of the world expects. Going out of HEIC, they decode the HEVC picture with libheif compiled to WebAssembly and write JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF or a PDF. Going in, they take JPG, PNG or WebP and write a HEIC. Each tool shows its real result: file sizes before and after, the dimensions, and a warning when something was scaled down or could not be kept.

Pick by destination. JPG opens everywhere and is the right default. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, at about four times the size of the HEIC on our test photos. WebP and AVIF are smaller than JPG for the web, but WebP cannot be written by Safari and AVIF encodes slowly. TIFF is for print, archives and editors that want an uncompressed or losslessly compressed file, in 8 or 16 bits per channel, at several times the size of the HEIC. PDF puts a set of photos into one document. For a whole folder, the batch converter takes up to 50 files or 500 MB per run and gives one ZIP and an error list.

Colour and metadata behave consistently. Display P3 photos are converted to sRGB by default so colours look right everywhere, with an option to embed the wide-colour profile in JPG and PNG. JPG, PNG and WebP output keeps the date taken, camera and exposure settings by default and adds the GPS location only if you switch it on; AVIF and PDF output carries no Exif, and no output carries XMP. The HEIC-writing tools are different: they apply Exif orientation, can write camera and date Exif (JPG to HEIC only, with GPS off unless you opt in), and handle transparency deliberately. Their encoder has no quality control, so check the measured size, since a HEIC is not always smaller than the file it came from.

Choosing the right tool

For a copy that opens anywhere

Use HEIC to JPG. Quality 85 is the default; on a test photo, 100 gave near-identical pixels but a file about five times larger.

For editing, transparency or exact pixels

Use HEIC to PNG. It is lossless and keeps transparency, but files are several times larger than the HEIC.

For print, archives and 16-bit editing

Use HEIC to TIFF. It is lossless (LZW, Deflate or none), embeds a colour profile and keeps the date and camera details, and it can write 16-bit files from 10-bit photos. Expect files several times the size of the HEIC.

For web delivery

Use HEIC to WebP (not in Safari) or HEIC to AVIF (smaller but slow). Test photo: WebP at 85 was 16% smaller than JPG at 85.

For a folder or a very large set

Use the batch converter: drop a folder on a desktop browser, choose JPG, PNG or WebP, and collect one ZIP. Runs are limited to 50 files or 500 MB.

For one document from several photos

Use HEIC to PDF to order the photos, pick A4, Letter or image-sized pages, and choose JPEG or lossless storage.

For going back to HEIC

Use JPG, PNG or WebP to HEIC. Each reads your file first (JPEG quality, PNG transparency, WebP animation) and shows the measured size, because the result can be larger.
