What this tool does

Drop a HEIC file onto this page and it opens as a picture, in any modern browser, with nothing to install. Of the major browsers only Safari 17 and later can display HEIC itself (caniuse's HEIF table tracks this); Chrome, Edge and Firefox show a broken image or offer a download. This viewer decodes the file inside the page and paints the result on a canvas, so a photo copied from an iPhone opens on a Windows, Linux or Chromebook machine just as it does in Safari.

Above the preview, a bar shows the pixel dimensions, the file size and the type detected from the file's contents, not its extension. If a file named .heic is really a JPEG or an AVIF, the bar says the extension does not match. Zoom runs from 25 to 400 percent in 25 percent steps, rotation is in 90-degree turns, and Fit scales the photo to the window. These affect only what you see; a download is always the full decoded picture, unrotated and unzoomed.

The viewer answers a practical question quickly: does this file open at all? A damaged, truncated or unsupported file gets a plain explanation and a suggested next step rather than a library error, and the upload area stays in place so you can try another file without reloading. The viewer shows the picture only, not the metadata inside it. For capture settings and location, use the EXIF viewer, and for the container's structure, the file info tool.

How to use it

  1. 01

    Drop in a file

Drag a HEIC or HEIF file onto the upload area, or click to browse. One image opens at a time.

  2. 02

    Wait for the decode

The file is decoded in a background worker. A full-resolution photo takes a moment, and the page stays usable meanwhile.

  3. 03

    Read the info bar

Check the pixel dimensions, file size and type. A note appears when the extension does not match the contents.

  4. 04

    Zoom, rotate or fit

Use the magnifier buttons for 25 to 400 percent, the arrows to turn the view 90 degrees, and the corner-arrows button to fit the photo to the window.

  5. 05

Save a copy if you need one

Download JPG or Download PNG saves the decoded picture at its full size. The HEIC itself is never changed.

  6. 06

    Open another file

Press Open another to clear the preview and pick a different image.

When to use it

Opening iPhone photos on a desktop that cannot

Photos copied to a Windows or Linux PC are often shown as blank icons in the default viewer. Here they open directly, and you can save a JPG for anything else.

Checking a file before you convert a folder

If a photo opens here, the converters will handle it. If it fails, you learn that before a long batch, and the health check can say whether it is damaged or just unsupported.

Confirming a repaired or converted file

After a repair or a conversion, open the result to confirm it displays and is the right way up.

One-off JPG for a form or slide

When a single photo has to go into software that rejects HEIC, download a JPG from the viewer without setting up anything else.

Good to know

  • 01One file at a time, and only the main image of it. For a set, use the contact sheet or the batch converter.
  • 02Downloads are re-encoded from the decoded picture, so the JPG or PNG carries no EXIF, GPS or XMP, and wide-gamut photos are converted to sRGB. JPG is lossy.
  • 03Zoom and rotation are display-only and are not saved to a download.
  • 04On iPhone and iPad, Safari limits a canvas to about 16.7 megapixels. A 24 or 48 MP photo is scaled down for the preview, and for any download, with a visible warning. A desktop browser shows the full resolution.
  • 05AVIF files open only where the browser has its own AV1 decoder. HEIC does not depend on browser support, because the decoder ships with the page.

Technical notes

Privacy and limits

Your file stays on your device

This tool runs in your browser with WebAssembly. The file is read into the tab, processed there and discarded when you close it — there is no upload and no account. You can check this yourself in your browser's network panel, and the privacy page lists what analytics does and does not receive.

Limits and checks

Up to 100 MB and 100 megapixels per file; batches of up to 50 files and 500 MB. Files are treated as untrusted input and every output is re-opened and validated before it is offered — see how we handle untrusted files.
