Troubleshooting

HEIC not showing in Gallery? Android and iPhone fixes

A HEIC that will not show in a gallery is almost always one of four things: the photo never fully arrived (a chat download or an iCloud fetch is pending), it sits in a folder the gallery does not read, the app lacks permission to see it, or the phone cannot decode that particular file. The flowchart below finds your branch in a minute. If the file is on your phone and you just need the picture, open it from the Files app in [HEIC to JPG](/heic-to-jpg) and convert a copy.

Key takeaways

  • On an iPhone, a grey or unloaded photo is often iCloud: Apple says Optimise Storage keeps space-saving versions on the device and you can download the originals over Wi-Fi or cellular. Check the library status first.
  • WhatsApp's own help says Android saves media to the WhatsApp/Media folder, that a .nomedia file hides a folder's photos from the gallery, and that Media visibility (Android) or Save to Photos (iPhone) controls saving. It does not mention HEIC.
  • Android's documentation lists HEIF decoding from Android 9 and marks it device optional, so a phone can fail to decode a HEIC that another phone opens. It also lists DCIM and Pictures as the folders whose images go into the Images collection.
  • Messages and AirDrop on iPhone put received photos in Photos; Apple's Messages setting 'Shared with You' can save photos automatically, and Send Low Quality Photo Previews can show a small version first.
  • The reliable fallback is a JPG copy: HEIC to JPG works on your device, keeps the date and camera details and leaves out GPS by default.

HEIC photo not showing in a gallery: which branch are you on?A flowchart with three branches. iPhone or iPad: if the photo is grey, blurry or loading, iCloud Optimise Storage may still need to download the original, so check the library status and download originals; if it came by Messages, check Shared with You saving; if it came by AirDrop, look in Photos or the Files app. Android: if the photo is in Download or another app's folder, look under On this device in Google Photos or the Files app; if the gallery shows nothing at all, check the app's Photos and videos permission; if Files shows it but the gallery does not, convert a copy to JPG. Chat apps: for WhatsApp, check Media visibility on Android or Save to Photos on iPhone, and any .nomedia file; if it will not download, check the connection, the app update and permissions; if it stays blank, ask for a JPG or convert a copy.Where is the HEIC not showing?IPHONE OR IPADPhotos app1. Pick your device or app and follow the checks down. Each fix is explained in the sections below, with what the vendor's own help says and where it says nothing.

The quickest checks, in order

  1. 01

Is the full photo actually on the phone?

In a chat app, tap the photo to download it. On an iPhone, open Photos, tap Collections, then your profile button and read the library status; Apple's page lists messages such as Low Data Mode, Low Power Mode, Low Battery and iCloud storage is full. Connect to power and Wi-Fi and let it finish.

  2. 02

    Look in the file manager

On Android, open the Files app and check Download and the chat app's folder. If the file is there but the gallery does not list it, the cause is the folder, a permission or the decoder, not a missing file. In Google Photos, open Collections and then On this device to see device folders.

  3. 03

    Check the app's photo permission

On Android: Settings, Apps, the app, Permissions, then switch its photo permission to Allow (Google Play Help). The label varies by phone and Android version.

  4. 04

    Convert a copy

If the file exists but will not display, drop a copy into HEIC to JPG (embedded below). It is decoded in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Why a HEIC can arrive but not appear on Android

Five stages between receiving a HEIC on Android and seeing it in a galleryStage one, the app downloads the file: a weak connection, a missing update or a missing permission stops it. Stage two, the file is saved in a folder: a .nomedia file in that folder or a Media visibility setting turned off hides it from the gallery. Stage three, Android indexes media: its documentation lists DCIM and Pictures for images and Download for downloads, and says nothing about which folders a given gallery app shows. Stage four, the gallery app lists it: it needs the Photos and videos permission, and Android 14 lets a user grant only selected photos. Stage five, a decoder opens the HEIC: Android decodes HEIF from version 9, but support is device optional.1 · THE APPDownloads the fileChat apps fetch media on demandor automaticallyWeak signal, old app, no permission2 · THE FOLDERSaves it to storageWhatsApp: WhatsApp/Media folderA .nomedia file hides a folderMedia visibility off, or .nomedia3 · THE MEDIA INDEXAndroid scans for mediaImages in DCIM/ and Pictures/Downloads go to their own tablePer-app folder rules not documented4 · THE GALLERY APPLists what it may seeNeeds the Photos and videos permissionAndroid 14: user can pick photosPermission denied or limited5 · THE DECODEROpens the HEIC itselfHEIF decoding since Android 9Listed as device optionalBlank or grey if the device can't
The five stages between receiving a HEIC and seeing it in a gallery. The highlighted stages, the folder and the media index, are where 'it's saved but I can't see it' usually lives.

1. The download

WhatsApp's help says the most common reason media will not download, open or send is a weak internet connection, and suggests restarting the phone, updating WhatsApp and the phone, and switching between mobile data and Wi-Fi. It adds that opening or downloading problems can come from an SD card that is full, read-only or corrupted, and that WhatsApp needs permission to access photos and media: on Android, Settings, Apps, WhatsApp, Permissions, then Photos and videos, Allow. If you see 'This file format is not supported', it says to update WhatsApp.

2. The folder, Media visibility and .nomedia

WhatsApp's help says that on Android media is saved automatically in the WhatsApp/Media folder, and that Media visibility is on by default. You can switch it off for all chats (Settings, Chats, Media visibility) or per chat (the chat's Contact info or Group info, Media visibility, No). On an iPhone the equivalent is Save to Photos, set under Settings, Chats, or per chat to Default, Always or Never.

WhatsApp also documents the manual trick: create a file named .nomedia, with the leading dot, in the WhatsApp images folder and the photos disappear from the gallery; delete the file and they return. Android's own MediaStore reference agrees about the name: the file .nomedia tells the media scanner to ignore media in the containing directory and its subdirectories, so apps do not leak their graphics into the Gallery. If photos in one folder are missing from the gallery and the folder holds a .nomedia file, that is the cause. A file manager that shows hidden files can delete it.

3. The media index

Android Developers says the system scans external storage and adds media to collections: images in the DCIM/ and Pictures/ directories go to the Images table, and downloaded files in Download/ go to a separate Downloads table on Android 10 and later. The page does not say which folders any particular gallery app shows, so a HEIC that sits only in Download may or may not appear in your gallery. That is why moving the file into Pictures, or opening it from Files, is worth trying. It is a hint, not a documented fix.

Android 14 introduced Selected Photos Access, which lets users grant an app access to specific images and videos rather than all media of a type. Android Developers describes this for apps targeting Android 14 and later, with the system managing the experience for others. If an app offers to let you choose photos and you chose a few, it will see only those. Re-open its Photos and videos permission and choose to allow all. Google Play Help gives the route: Settings, Apps, pick the app, Permissions.

5. The decoder

Android's supported-formats table lists HEIF (.heic and .heif) decoding from Android 9.0 and marks it device optional, with 10-bit decoding needing the optional HEVC Main10 profile. So a blank thumbnail may be the phone's decoder, not the folder or the permission. That also explains why one HEIC shows and another from the same sender does not. One GrapheneOS issue-tracker report, from May 2026, describes some iPhone HEICs received over RCS in Google Messages showing as static or blank on a Pixel 10, while others from iPhones worked, with a developer reproducing it on a Pixel 7 Pro and reporting it working on a stock Pixel 6. It is one unresolved community report, not a general rule. See HEIC on Android for the platform picture.

Google Photos' own help says that if you delete an item from your device without backing up your device folders, it will not appear in Google Photos. If photos seem lost after a clear-out, check Trash too; Google says deleted backed-up items stay in the trash for 30 days.

WhatsApp's own advice for blurry photos is to turn on automatic photo saving: it says a photo can look blurry if WhatsApp can no longer find it on your device or SD card, usually because it was deleted. That fits a gallery you tidied by hand.

For text messages, Apple's page on photos in Messages says to make sure the device has enough space, that a carrier can set attachment size limits for SMS or MMS, and that the iPhone can compress attachments when necessary. If a full-size image will not come through, Apple says to turn on Send Photo Previews or Low Quality Image Mode under Settings, Apps, Messages.

iPhone: photo not loading

Why an iPhone photo can look unloaded: iCloud keeps the full size in the cloudThree stages. With iCloud Photos on, the original full-resolution photo is stored in iCloud. With Optimise Storage on, the iPhone keeps a space-saving version and fetches the original when needed, over Wi-Fi or cellular. Syncing can be paused by Low Data Mode, Low Power Mode, a low battery, a poor network or a full iCloud plan, so clear any status message in the library first. Apple's page does not say whether a pause also holds up on-demand downloads. The other fix is to choose Download and Keep Originals in the iPhone's iCloud Photos settings if there is room.1 · ICLOUDHolds the originalFull resolution, original formatHEIF, JPEG, RAW and moreThe full-size photo exists2 · YOUR IPHONEKeeps a smaller copyOptimise Storage swaps in aspace-saving version when space is shortOriginal is fetched when needed3 · THE FETCHNeeds a clear pathWi-Fi or cellular, power, iCloud spaceand no Low Data or Low Power ModeClear any paused-sync message first
With iCloud Photos on, the full-size photo lives in iCloud and the phone may keep only a smaller copy. A photo that looks unloaded is usually waiting for the full size.

Apple's iCloud Photos page says photos are stored in iCloud in their original formats at full resolution, and that with Optimise Storage on, the device keeps space-saving versions while iCloud holds the originals; 'You can download originals over Wi-Fi or cellular'. The iPhone User Guide adds that Optimise iPhone Storage is on by default.

  1. 01

    Read the library status

Open Photos, tap Collections, then your profile button, and read the status under your name. In iOS 17 or earlier, go to Library, tap All Photos and scroll to the bottom (Apple). Follow the on-screen directions.

  2. 02

Clear the usual causes of a pause

Apple's page says Low Data Mode or Low Power Mode pauses syncing, a poor network or system optimisation can be forced with Sync Now, a battery below 20 per cent pauses it, and a full iCloud plan pauses it too. Connect to power and Wi-Fi and let it sync overnight. Apple's page does not say whether a pause also holds up on-demand downloads, so treat this as the sensible first step.

  3. 03

Keep full-size photos on the phone, if there is room

In the iPhone User Guide: Settings, tap your name, iCloud, Photos, iPhone Storage, then Download and Keep Originals. Labels vary by iOS version, and Apple's iCloud page says only 'Optimize Storage' for iOS 26 or earlier.

  4. 04

Look for an Unable to Upload album

Apple says some photos that will not sync can sit in an album named Unable to Upload, and that editing a photo, or uploading it again from the iPhone, may let it upload.

  5. 05

Get the real HEIC off the phone

To convert a copy, select photos in your Library, tap Share, then Export Unmodified Originals and save them to Files (Apple). Then use HEIC to JPG. From a computer, iCloud.com offers Unmodified Originals, Highest Resolution (typically HEIC) or Most Compatible (JPEG).

Messages and AirDrop photos on an iPhone go to Photos. If a HEIC from someone else is still not showing, it may be damaged: the health check decodes it on your device and says whether the structure and image data are intact.

Convert HEIC to JPG here

Pick the file from your phone's storage or Files app. Nothing is uploaded. For many files use the batch converter. A JPG keeps the date and camera details and has no GPS unless you switch it on.

What does not work

  • Renaming .heic to .jpg. The contents are still HEIC, so a gallery that cannot decode it still shows a blank.
  • Turning iCloud Photos off. Apple says it restarts syncing.
  • Resending the same file. If the phone cannot decode it, the resend fails the same way. Ask for a JPG, or convert the received copy.

What we could not verify

  • Whether WhatsApp or Messenger converts HEIC. Neither help names the format.
  • How Samsung Gallery and other maker gallery apps treat HEIC, and which folders each shows. Samsung documents neither on the pages we could open.
  • Whether a HEIC saved only in Download appears in a given gallery. Android documents the media index, not each app.
  • Whether Apple's paused-sync states also pause on-demand downloads of originals.
  • How the iOS 27 and iOS 26 Settings labels differ for Optimise Storage beyond what Apple's two pages say.
